Top Tips for Choosing the Ideal Location for Your Senior Photo Session

Updated: Jan 6, 2023

One of the most important decisions we will make together about your senior session is - what location do you want for your senior portraits?

You can’t choose just any location either – it needs to fit in with your personality and. the style of your shoot.

Vermont offers a variety of beautiful locations and choosing one might feel overwhelming or you may not know where to start. No worries, I will be helping you from day one to ensure you get the location and look that you want.

Here are a few tips to help:

Decide what you want your photos to say about you. Who are you? Do you love the outdoors, art, sports? Are you a bit of a flower child?

Nature: This might be an open field, trees, your favorite hiking trail. Water: Vermont has some of the most beautiful streams, ponds, rivers and lakes.

Do you have a favorite swimming hole, camping or fishing spot?

Flowers: Fields of flowers, your favorite flower farm or garden blooms will add

unique textures and colors to your photos.

Rustic: Do you have a favorite old barn or building? Do you live on a farm and want

to include your favorite horse or animal? Urban: This downtown and city locations include streets, old, refurbished or modern

buildings, parking garage or a skyline view. We can also find urban vibes in many small

Vermont towns.

Seasons: Spring, summer, fall and winter each have something unique in their colors,

and vibe to set your photos apart.

Pro tip: if you want fall pictures, book your photographer early as that is the busiest

season for Vermont photographers.

Creative: The sky is the limit on this. Some ideas are tree art, museums, libraries, county

fairs and ski resorts are just a few ideas. Where do you go that brings you joy? Is there a

place that has special meaning to you or your family?

Find out about possible restrictions. If you’re considering using a commercial location, find out whether you need a permit to take photos. Keep in mind that permits can sometimes take several weeks to process or may include a fee.

Lighting matters too. Natural light is a must for photos, including your senior portraits. You could have the best background, but if the lighting is bad, you won’t get the best results. It’s also important to remember that you might need to time your shoot around the best lighting for your location. Typically, early morning or the hour or so before sunset (also known as 'golden hour') is the optimal time, but objects and heavy backgrounds effect when the best lighting is.

One of my favorite things working with seniors is finding the perfect location for your vision, and if you don't know where to start, no worries. My senior questionnaire and onboarding process will make the process easy and more importantly fun!
